Health Benefits of Tea: Green, Black and White Tea

A lot of brews are known by the name Tea, but traditionally only green tea, black tea, white tea, oolong tea, and pu-erh tea are considered as the real ones. All of them contain unique antioxidants called flavonoids. The most powerful of these, known as ECGC, may help against free radicals which may contribute to cancer, clogged arteries and heart disease. All these teas also seem to heighten mental alertness because of the presence of caffeine and theanine in them. The more processed the tea leaves, the lesser the polyphenol content which includes flavonoids.

Oolong and black teas have lower levels of polyphenols than green tea as they are oxidized and fermented. But their antioxidizing power is still high.

Here’s what some studies have found about the potential health benefits of the teas generally consumed like green tea, black tea and white tea.

White tea:  White tea is minimally processed and hence retains high amounts of antioxidants and very less amounts of caffeine. White Tea is made from carefully hand-picked beautiful silver buds and young leaves which have been steamed and sundried. It is the most premium out of all tea types and the most delicate and fresh. Uncured and unfermented, studies show that the catechins present in White tea help lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases, prevents hepatitis B infection and promotes healthy liver. According to studies white tea is loaded with the most potent anticancer properties as compared to teas which are more processed. Antioxidants in the white tea also offer cell protection from the increased oxidative damage during pregnancy.
